In response to the long-standing challenge of accessing clean drinking water in rural areas, the flood control bureau has focused on developing science and technology personnel to create efficient and affordable solutions. By leveraging the principles of using 600 drilling rigs and hand-powered woodworking drills, they have successfully captured the core features of geological drilling equipment. After years of continuous trials and improvements, the team finally developed a cost-effective and fast-drilling system. The machine is user-friendly, compact, and highly flexible, making it ideal for small-scale well drilling in hilly regions. This innovation was recognized with the second prize at the 2005 Science and Technology Achievements Competition in Shehong County.
The machine can drill depths ranging from 20 to 30 meters, with a maximum diameter of 0.3 meters. It is powered by a diesel engine with 6 to 12 horsepower and includes an electric screw pump. The entire unit weighs only 160 kilograms, and each unit costs around 5,000 yuan to produce. The cost per well is between 10 to 15 yuan, which is just 3.6% of the cost of the traditional 600-type drilling rig. Its efficiency and affordability led to its promotion at the Sichuan Provincial Farmland Infrastructure Conference. Governor Zhang Zhongwei personally tested the machine and praised its performance.
During the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, a total of 242 units were produced. These machines were deployed across 592 villages in the county, resulting in the installation of 45,651 micro-well systems. This achievement has provided safe and reliable drinking water to 261,000 people, allowing farmers to access clean tap water with confidence. It has also alleviated the anxiety of many rural families who previously struggled with water shortages, especially among the elderly, the weak, and the sick. The machine has been exported to several cities and counties, including Bazhong, Pyeongchang, Renshou, Zhongjiang, and Yanting, playing a vital role in addressing the issue of rural water supply in mountainous areas of Sichuan.
