On Monday afternoon, firefighters from Wheeling and Prospect Heights responded to a reported crash at 100 E. Palatine Road. The location is on the westbound Palatine frontage road, just east of the railroad tracks. Upon arrival, emergency crews were directed to a vehicle that had veered off the road and rolled down an embankment, coming to rest beneath a railroad bridge.
The car’s sole occupant, who appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries, was trapped inside and unable to exit on their own. Firefighters used tools to force open the door and carefully removed the individual using a backboard. The patient was then transported up the embankment and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Once the occupant was safely removed, a tow truck from Gene's Towing arrived to lift the vehicle back onto the road. During the operation, train traffic in the area was temporarily halted for approximately 30 minutes to ensure the safety of the responders and the public. Firefighters and tow operators worked together beneath the bridge, clearing the scene and stabilizing the vehicle.
Photos from the scene show the car wedged under the railroad bridge, with debris scattered around the area. Several images capture the effort of the tow company as they winched the vehicle back into place. The incident highlights the challenges that can arise when vehicles become stuck in difficult terrain, especially near critical infrastructure like railroad crossings.
Local residents and commuters were advised to be cautious in the area during the response and cleanup. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no serious injuries were reported. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of emergency services and the coordination required to handle such situations efficiently.
