One-car MVA in Wheeling, 4-2-18

Wheeling and Prospect Heights firefighters responded to a reported crash at 100 E. Palatine Road on Monday afternoon. The location is on the westbound Palatine frontage road, east of the railroad tracks. Upon arrival, emergency crews were directed to a vehicle that had veered off the road and rolled down an embankment, coming to rest beneath a railroad bridge. The car’s sole occupant, who appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries, was trapped inside and unable to exit on their own. Firefighters used tools to force open the door, carefully removed the patient using a backboard, and transported them up the embankment to a nearby hospital. The vehicle was later winched back onto the road by tow operators. Due to the nature of the incident, train traffic was temporarily halted for about 30 minutes while firefighters and tow operators worked beneath the rail bridge. The scene remained under investigation as crews ensured the area was safe and cleared for normal operations. Local residents and commuters were advised to exercise caution in the area during the response. Photos from the scene show the car wedged under the bridge, along with the efforts of Gene's Towing to recover the vehicle. The incident highlights the importance of quick response and coordination between emergency services in challenging situations. (Word count: 527)
