I made my first 210,000 kilowatt circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler.

On July 14, it was revealed that Huaneng Group has successfully completed the 96-hour trial run of China's first domestically developed 210,000 kW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler unit. The achievement took place on July 7 at the Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute under Huaneng Holding. This marks a major breakthrough in China's power industry, as it is the first large-scale CFB boiler with full independent intellectual property rights to be developed and applied domestically. During the trial operation, the unit demonstrated excellent stability, reaching a peak load of 224,000 kW. All key technical performance indicators met the design specifications. Notably, the self-developed external heat exchanger and compact split-flow ash heat exchanger performed reliably, proving their effectiveness through real-world testing. To support the development of a 200,000 kW class CFB boiler, the institute designed an innovative external heat exchanger — the compact split-ash return heat exchanger. This system uses a unique pneumatic method to control the circulation of ash, integrating both the return hot valve and the external bed for circulating hot ash. Its simple structure, ease of operation and maintenance, and cost-effectiveness make it a promising solution for large-scale CFB boiler projects. Circulating fluidized bed boiler technology is considered one of the clean coal power generation technologies, alongside flue gas purification systems and supercritical/ultra-supercritical power units. It offers significant reductions in pollutant emissions, can adapt to a wide range of coal types, and provides excellent load adjustment capabilities. This new development reinforces China’s growing capabilities in advanced energy technologies, supporting sustainable and efficient power generation.
