Li Jiulin’s days were filled with walking around the construction site, often for over 1,000 days. Since the project began in 2003, he had made the site his second home. His office, a small room on the second floor of the shelter, was modest, with a blue bed tucked behind the desk and books scattered across the table. He often slept there, spending half the year living on-site, away from his family.
As the structural phase of the Bird’s Nest neared completion, Li Jiulin transitioned into the finishing stage, where he became more of a “beautician†than an engineer. The complexity of the design posed unique challenges—over 80% of the pillars were repeated, and their intersections were intricate, requiring careful adjustment and attention to detail.
Despite the pressure, Li Jiulin remained focused on the final outcome. “We have to rely on the audience and athletes to tell us if we did well,†he said. “If they feel comfortable, then we succeeded.†He hoped the opening ceremony would come soon, though he admitted to feeling some nervousness about it.
One of the most touching aspects of the project was the engraving of welders’ names on each joint. Over 450 skilled welders were selected from across the country, working under extreme conditions. Many of them endured high temperatures and awkward positions for long hours, ensuring that every weld met the highest standards. Their work, though unseen by the public, was essential to the success of the Bird’s Nest.
Li Jiulin often reflected on the emotional connection he felt with the stadium. “It’s not just a job anymore,†he said. “It’s part of me now.†Even after the project was complete, he still found himself thinking about it, looking at models in stores, or seeing the structure from afar.
When asked if the Bird’s Nest would be his pinnacle, he responded humbly: “It’s a great achievement, but I believe there will be even greater projects ahead.†For Li Jiulin, the Bird’s Nest was not the end, but a milestone in a long career of building and creating.
