Versatile History Timeline

Peter Pakosh, A 20th Century Farm Equipment Legend

Versatile was founded in 1966 by Peter Pakosh (1911–1999) and Roy Robinson. The company became famous for its high-horsepower 4WD tractors, which revolutionized farming equipment in the mid-20th century.

Growing up on a modest prairie homestead in Saskatchewan, Peter had a deep connection with agriculture from an early age. He spent his childhood working on his family's farm and developed a passion for understanding how machines worked. He often took apart and reassembled his father’s tools to learn their inner workings.

Peter’s journey from a farm boy to a successful entrepreneur is one of perseverance, creativity, and vision. After leaving home to study engineering, he promised his father that he would bring him back a tractor one day. That promise eventually led to the creation of Versatile, a brand that would change the face of modern farming.

Before founding Versatile, Peter worked at Massey-Harris, where he gained valuable experience in agricultural machinery. But his dream was to create his own line of tractors—machines that were not only powerful but also easy to maintain and affordable for farmers.

His dedication to innovation was evident in the way he constantly sketched and designed new ideas. He kept a drafting table in his bedroom, where he spent countless nights turning his thoughts into blueprints. He would even stop in the factory to draw out new designs while wearing a three-piece suit, showing his commitment to both style and function.

Jarrod Pakosh, Peter’s grandson, wrote a popular book titled *Versatile Tractors: A Farm Boy’s Dream* in 2003. This book highlights not just the technological achievements of Versatile, but also the personal values of Peter, who always placed his family and faith above all else.

One of Peter’s most notable contributions was the development of the modern grain auger used in combine harvesters today. Many industry experts compare him to agricultural pioneers like John Deere and Cyrus McCormick due to his impact on mechanization in farming.

In 1993, Peter was honored by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) as one of the "100 Significant Contributors to the Mechanization of Agriculture and Construction." In 2009, he was inducted into the Manitoba Manufacturers' Hall of Fame by the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME).

4WD High Horsepower Tractor Success

Peter’s mission was to make high-quality farm equipment more accessible to farmers. When he introduced the first Versatile tractor in 1966, it cost $9,000, while a similar 4WD model from John Deere sold for $28,000. This made Versatile a game-changer in the industry.

Versatile was among the first companies to produce articulated 4WD tractors. Their D100/G100 model, launched in the late 1960s, featured a 100-horsepower engine and weighed over 14,500 pounds. At its peak, Versatile held around 70% of the 4WD tractor market share.

Ownership Changes

Today, Versatile is part of Buhler Industries, a publicly traded company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. In 2007, Rostselmash, a Russian agricultural equipment manufacturer, acquired a controlling stake in Buhler, which also owns other brands such as Farm King.

Over the years, the company has changed hands multiple times:

  • 1966: Versatile was founded by Peter Pakosh and Roy Robinson.
  • 1987: Ford-New Holland acquired Versatile.
  • 1999: Buhler Industries bought Versatile when CNH Global was formed.
  • 2007: Rostselmash acquired 80% of Buhler Industries, gaining control of the company.

Besides 4WD tractors, Versatile has also produced a wide range of farm equipment, including augers, swathers, and combine harvesters.

Branding Changes

Versatile has evolved its branding over the years, but the word "Versatile" has remained a constant. In 2016, the company updated its color scheme from red and black to red, black, and gold. This change gave its tractors a more refined and appealing look, especially on the grill and decals.
