Mayor Richard Daley has named Robert Hoff, a long-time member of the Chicago Fire Department, as the city’s new fire commissioner. Hoff, who has served as the department’s first deputy commissioner since 2008, brings over three decades of experience to the role, according to Daley, who made the announcement during a press conference at City Hall.

Mayor Richard Daley today announced the appointment of Robert Hoff as the city's new fire commissioner. Hoff, a 33-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department, was previously serving as the department’s first deputy commissioner since 2008. Daley praised his leadership and dedication, saying he hopes to continue the department’s strong cross-training programs and high standards of professionalism that have placed the CFD among the top fire departments in the country.

“In addition to his bravery, he is a great administrator and leader,” Daley said.

Hoff, a third-generation firefighter, succeeds John Brooks, who recently announced his retirement. The transition comes after the city investigated allegations that a sexual harassment complaint against Brooks had been ignored. Daley appointed Brooks in July 2008, making him the second African-American to lead the department.

Hoff has twice received the Carter Harrison Award, the highest honor for bravery in the department. In 1992, he was recognized for rescuing elderly residents from a burning building after a gas explosion. In 1997, he saved two young boys from a fire in Englewood. He also spent 21 days in a burn unit following injuries sustained in a 1984 fire.

Hoff was inspired to join the fire department after his father, Thomas Hoff, died in 1962 when a building collapsed. “That’s all I ever wanted in my life was to be a firefighter,” he said.

He also served as the incident commander for the Chicago Fire Department’s response to the September 11 attacks in New York City and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. With this new appointment, Hoff steps into one of the most respected roles in the city’s emergency services, carrying forward a legacy of service and sacrifice.
