Mayor Richard Daley has named Robert Hoff as the new fire commissioner of Chicago, marking a significant leadership change for the city's fire department. Hoff, a 33-year veteran and first deputy commissioner since 2008, will take over from John Brooks, who recently announced his retirement after a controversial period of scrutiny involving internal complaints.

“In addition to his bravery, he is a great administrator and leader,” Daley said during a press conference at City Hall. “I believe he will continue the strong cross-training programs and professionalism that have made our department one of the best in the country.”

Hoff, a third-generation firefighter, has a remarkable record of service and heroism. He was awarded the Carter Harrison Award, the department’s highest honor for bravery, twice—once in 1992 for rescuing elderly residents after a gas explosion, and again in 1997 for saving two young boys from a burning building in Englewood.

His dedication to the profession runs deep. Hoff suffered serious burns in a 1984 fire and spent 21 days in a burn unit. His path to firefighting was shaped by personal loss—his father, Thomas Hoff, died in 1962 while responding to a building collapse. “That’s all I ever wanted in my life was to be a firefighter,” Hoff shared.

Hoff also played a key role in the department’s response to major disasters, including serving as incident commander for the Chicago Fire Department’s deployment to New York City following the 9/11 attacks and to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

With his extensive background, leadership skills, and deep commitment to public service, Hoff is poised to lead the Chicago Fire Department into a new chapter of excellence and resilience.
