Peter Pakosh, A 20th Century Farm Equipment Legend

Versatile was founded in 1966 by Peter Pakosh (1911–1999) and Roy Robinson. The company is best known for its high-horsepower 4WD tractors that revolutionized farming in the mid-20th century.

Growing up on a modest prairie homestead in Saskatchewan, Peter was deeply connected to agriculture from an early age. He spent his childhood learning how farm equipment worked, often disassembling and reassembling machines just to understand their mechanics. This hands-on experience would later shape his vision for making farming more efficient and affordable.

After attending engineering school, Peter returned home with a dream: to build a tractor that farmers could afford. His passion for innovation led him to work at Massey-Harris, where he gained valuable knowledge about agricultural machinery. However, his true ambition was to create something of his own, which eventually led to the founding of Versatile.

Peter was known for his relentless drive and creative thinking. He kept a drafting table in his bedroom, constantly sketching new ideas. He would even walk through the factory in a suit, stopping to draw on the floor what he envisioned. His ability to turn concepts into real machines made him a visionary in the industry.

Jarrod Pakosh, Peter’s grandson, wrote a popular book titled *Versatile Tractors: A Farm Boy's Dream* in 2003. It offers a detailed look at Peter’s life and legacy. According to Jarrod, although Peter is remembered for his tractors, he always prioritized family and faith over business success.

One of Peter’s most significant contributions was the modern grain auger used in combine harvesters today. Many historians compare him to industry giants like John Deere and Cyrus McCormick, recognizing his impact on mechanization in agriculture.

In 1993, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) honored Peter as one of "100 Significant Contributors to the Mechanization of Agriculture and Construction." In 2009, he was inducted into the Manitoba Manufacturers' Hall of Fame by the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME).

4WD High Horsepower Tractor Success

When Peter launched Versatile in 1966, his goal was to make high-quality farm equipment more accessible to farmers. His first tractor, priced at $9,000, was significantly cheaper than the $28,000 4WD models available from competitors like John Deere. This affordability helped Versatile gain a strong foothold in the market.

Versatile was among the first companies to produce articulated 4WD tractors. The D100/G100 series was a breakthrough, featuring a 100-horsepower engine and weighing 14,500 pounds. At its peak, Versatile captured around 70% of the 4WD tractor market.

Ownership Changes

Today, Versatile is part of Buhler Industries, a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange. In 2007, Rostselmash, a Russian agricultural equipment manufacturer, acquired a controlling stake in Buhler. Other brands under Buhler include Farm King.

The Pakosh family no longer holds a controlling interest in Versatile. Over the years, the company has changed hands multiple times:

• 1987: Ford-New Holland acquires Versatile
• 1999: Buhler Industries purchases Versatile
• 2007: Rostselmash acquires 80% of Buhler Industries

Besides 4WD tractors, Versatile also produces augers, swathers, and combine harvesters.

Branding Changes

Versatile has updated its branding over the years while keeping the word "Versatile" central to its identity. In 2016, the company introduced a new color scheme, adding gold to its traditional red and black. Gold now appears on grills and decals, giving its machines a more premium look.

Versatile Factory

All Versatile tractors and farm equipment are manufactured at a single facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The 700,000-square-foot plant on Clarence Avenue has produced over 100,000 tractors since it opened. Today, it builds fixed-frame front-wheel assist tractors ranging from 175 to 365 horsepower, as well as articulated 4WD and DeltaTrack models from 405 to 620 horsepower.

Cummins Engines

Modern Versatile tractors are equipped with Cummins engines, offering power ratings from 170 horsepower for the Nemesis model up to 620 horsepower for the DeltaTrack and 4WD models.

Versatile Tractors

The name "DeltaTrack" comes from the Greek letter delta, which resembles a triangle. The design of the tracks on the tractor forms this triangular shape.
