On Sunday morning, February 12, around 6:05 AM, the Englewood Fire Alarm Office started receiving multiple calls reporting a fire at the intersection of 44th Street and Shields Avenue. Engine 50 arrived shortly after and confirmed a blaze in a two-and-a-half-story vacant wooden frame building that had spread to a one-and-a-half-story occupied structure. Just two minutes later, the 2nd Battalion called in about heavy fire in the larger building and requested additional resources. The first image below shows the scene just before Engine 50 deployed their deck gun, which managed to douse much of the visible fire in the front. However, there was significant fire extension into the adjacent occupied building, prompting firefighters to launch an interior attack on that structure. Later, Squad 5's Snorkel and Tower Ladder 39 were brought in to help extinguish any remaining flames in the original building, which was undergoing renovations. Interestingly, an October 2015 Google Street View image showed this building marked with a Red-X symbol, indicating it might have experienced a previous basement fire.

As I stood there watching the chaos unfold, I couldn't help but think about how quickly things can spiral out of control. The firefighters were working tirelessly, their movements precise and coordinated despite the intense heat and smoke. The glow of the flames illuminated the entire block, casting long shadows that danced eerily against the surrounding structures. Neighbors gathered nearby, some watching anxiously while others helped direct traffic or offered support to the emergency responders. It was a stark reminder of both the dangers faced by these brave men and women and the importance of having a well-trained fire department in every community.
