Still & Box Alarm fire in Chicago, 2-12-17

This message comes from Eric Haak: Around 0605 hours on Sunday morning (February 12), the Englewood Fire Alarm Office received multiple calls reporting a fire at the intersection of 44th and Shields Avenue. Engine 50 arrived on the scene shortly after and confirmed a fire in a two-and-a-half-story vacant wooden frame building, with the adjacent one-and-a-half-story occupied frame building also catching fire. Just two minutes later, the Second Battalion reported heavy flames in the two-and-a-half-story building and requested a Box response. The first picture below was taken just before Engine 50 deployed their deck gun, which managed to knock down a significant portion of the visible fire on the front facade. However, there was extensive fire spread into the occupied neighboring building, prompting firefighters to launch an interior attack on that structure. Later, Squad 5's Snorkel and Tower Ladder 39 were brought in to handle the remaining fire in the original building, which was undergoing renovations. In an October 2015 Google Street View image, the building had been marked with a Red X, suggesting it had experienced a previous basement fire. It's intense, with flames shooting out of multiple windows, and the heat is palpable even from where I’m standing. The crews are working nonstop to ensure the fire doesn’t spread further, especially given the proximity of the occupied building. I’ve been taking pictures throughout the incident, capturing moments that really show the dedication and hard work of these firefighters. They’re doing everything they can to contain this blaze and protect the surrounding area. This has been going on for a while now, but the situation seems to be stabilizing a bit. I’ll keep you updated if anything changes. [Image description: More firefighters continuing their efforts to extinguish the flames]
