Although China's auto industry and consumer market are still in their early stages, much like the U.S. automotive landscape in the 1920s, the rapid pace of development has pushed Chinese automakers toward a critical phase: integration. This means moving away from the outdated model of "one province, one car company, one local brand" that led to excessive duplication and inefficiency.
Just last week, Beiqi, one of the smaller national players, announced its intention to merge with Fujian Auto Group, located in the southeast. Earlier this year, Dongfeng Group finalized the acquisition of Hafei, while Shangnan Cooperation entered a post-merger restructuring phase. By the second half of 2007, the domestic auto sector had entered a period of intense competition, signaling a major shift in the industry’s structure.
Currently, over 130 automakers operate in China—by far the highest number globally. However, the top ten companies accounted for more than 84% of total sales in 2006, leaving the remaining 120 manufacturers to share less than 1.2 million units. Many of these smaller players sell fewer than 10,000 vehicles annually, with dozens operating at even lower levels. With over 80 domestic brands, China far outnumbers the U.S., which has only 47 local brands and just 15 passenger car manufacturers.
While China has surpassed Japan in production and sales, becoming the world’s second-largest auto market, most of the large-scale production is still dominated by joint ventures. Only about 30% of the market belongs to truly independent Chinese brands. The rise in competition has triggered price wars, increased marketing costs, and reduced profit margins—even for major groups that once enjoyed the benefits of joint venture success.
At the same time, concerns about sustainability have resurfaced. Just as Detroit faced decline, similar challenges could loom for Chinese automakers. Industry trends suggest that companies producing less than one million vehicles annually may struggle to survive, and even those with two million units may need to restructure. Unlike international mergers, domestic integrations often involve government influence and policy-driven decisions.
In recent years, auto industry restructuring has continued, even before some large projects were officially announced. Examples include Dongfeng acquiring Zhengzhou Nissan, SAIC buying Ssangyong, Chery and Brilliance forming partnerships, and Changan and Jiangling merging. These moves are accelerating industry consolidation and reshuffling.
Through capital markets, the competitiveness of Chinese automakers is shifting from traditional manufacturing and R&D to financial strategies. Most companies will soon face the ultimate test: survival or collapse.
From a current perspective, the development of state-owned auto enterprises doesn’t seem to be driven by blind integration. Major players are making rational choices, focusing on complementary strengths and strategic fit. The high level of marketization and the absence of monopolies have allowed companies to make more informed decisions.
How many auto companies does China really need? It’s a simple question with no easy answer. Internationally, even the strongest auto industries rarely have more than six independent manufacturers. Yet, after this round of competition and collaboration, China still has dozens. The battle among auto companies is likely to continue for years to come.
Drill Bits
Drill bits are cutting tools used to remove material to create holes, almost always of circular cross-section. Drill bits come in many sizes and shapes and can create different kinds of holes in many different materials. In order to create holes drill bits are usually attached to a drill, which powers them to cut through the workpiece, typically by rotation. The drill will grasp the upper end of a bit called the shank in the chuck.
Drill bits come in standard sizes, described in the drill bit sizes article. A comprehensive drill bit and tap size chart lists metric and imperial sized drill bits alongside the required screw tap sizes. There are also certain specialized drill bits that can create holes with a non-circular cross-section.
