EU: Implementation of "Euro 6" Emissions for New Buses and Heavy Trucks


The European Commission announced on the 4th that from January 1st, 2013, the European Union's implementation of "Euro 6" emission standards for new buses and heavy trucks officially came into effect. This means that the EU has further increased its control over the emissions of relevant vehicle pollutants.

Before the "Euro 6" emission standard went into effect, the EU implemented the "Euro 5" emission standard introduced in 2008. Now, after the “Euro 6” emission standard is implemented, the nitrogen oxides in the tail gas of new buses and heavy trucks in the EU will be reduced by 80%, and the particulate matter content in the exhaust gas will be reduced by 66%.

It is worth mentioning that the "Euro 6" emission standard that has just come into effect is a direct decree, and the previous relevant emission standards were issued in the form of directives. The direct issuance of the decree dispenses with the procedure in which the 27 member states are required to turn orders into decrees. That is to say, the “Euro 6” standard comes into force at the outset, and each EU member state has to implement this standard. Therefore, the "Euro 6" emission standard will perform faster.

Deputy Commissioner of the European Commission and Industrial and Corporate Affairs Commissioner Tayani, when declaring that the "Euro 6" emission standard went into effect, said: "This new EU emission standard will make Europe's air cleaner and will make the European automobile industry more productive. Strong competitiveness.” He also said that the new emission standards introduced a set of test procedures and standards, which will help the EU automotive industry to expand product exports. European buses and big trucks have always guided the world in technology. Europe must maintain this status.

The significance of the new emission standards for Europe is twofold: First, it can reduce pollution to a greater extent and protect the environment.
