Wednesday afternoon saw Arlington Heights firefighters dispatched to 2150 S. Goebberts Road following reports of smoke filling the hallways of a two-story apartment complex approximately 45 feet by 200 feet in size. En route to the scene, the police department communicated that black smoke was billowing from one of the units, prompting an upgrade to a Code 4 status, indicating an active fire. Upon arrival, the initial responding unit, Arlington Heights Engine 3, initially observed no visible signs of fire from their approach but detected smoke inside the structure after entry. They swiftly deployed a pre-connected hose line. Shortly thereafter, Mt. Prospect Engine 12 arrived and assisted in setting up a water supply line before entering the building. The fire was confined to a single unit and extinguished rapidly.
Larry Shapiro happened to arrive just as the firefighting operations were winding down and managed to capture several images. For additional visuals, check out the gallery HERE.
The first engine on the scene had one line operational upon arrival, while a second line was later deployed from another engine. Interestingly, Arlington Heights Engine Company 3 was utilizing a backup vehicle today, as all engines within their fleet are state-of-the-art models built on the Pierce Quantum chassis. Larry Shapiro’s photograph captures this moment vividly, showing light smoke seeping from the first-floor apartment.
In another shot, both Arlington Heights and Mt. Prospect can be seen operating their respective Pierce Quantum engines. Notably, both departments feature first-generation Quantum cab designs. This image highlights the collaboration between neighboring departments, with Mt. Prospect Engine 12 positioned behind Arlington Engine 3. Such teamwork is crucial in managing incidents like these efficiently and effectively.
