Loves Park Fire Department news

The Loves Park City Council is actively contemplating ways to enhance its volunteer fire department by introducing a daytime crew. This initiative aims to address response times that currently stand at double those of the adjacent North Park Fire Protection District. The current volunteer force, comprising roughly 35 firefighters, typically responds to emergencies from their homes, which has been identified as a contributing factor to the slower response times. To tackle this issue, the city plans to deploy three firefighters, accompanied by two supervisors, at the 400 Grand Avenue station during the hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., possibly starting as soon as August.

These firefighters will earn between $12 and $20 per hour based on their level of experience. With an average weekly schedule of 28 hours, the city avoids the need to provide health insurance benefits, keeping costs manageable at around $200,000 annually. A recent analysis of response times for the first quarter of the year revealed that Loves Park averaged 15.2 minutes to reach incidents, while North Park, covering parts of Machesney Park and Winnebago County, managed to respond in just 6 minutes. Notably, these delays were consistent across different times of the day.

Implementing this daytime crew would see the fire department's annual expenditure rise by a third, reaching close to $1 million. During this period, notable response times included 27 minutes to 7349 Chucks Way and 24 minutes each to 12414 Kings Point Dr. and 5625 Covey Ridge Trail. However, since the inception of a mutual aid agreement in February between Loves Park and North Park, response times have shown improvement, dropping to 13.3 minutes in March from 17.6 minutes in February and 15.3 minutes in January.

Despite these efforts, Loves Park still faces significant logistical hurdles. Mayor Tim Baldermann has expressed interest in constructing a new fire station, projected to cost around $5 million, to further optimize response times in areas surrounding Mercyhealth Sportscore Two and the newly built trauma center at the intersection of East Riverside Boulevard and Interstate 90. Since Loves Park does not impose a property tax, the city must explore alternative funding options such as bonds or voter-approved levies to finance this ambitious project.
