Stay Ahead of Dehydration: Safety First at Work

Welcome back to Feature Friday! With summer in full swing, we at MacMor want to emphasize the critical importance of staying cool and hydrated! This post continues our Heat Stress Relief series, diving deeper into dehydration, its risks, and why simply drinking water isn’t always sufficient to combat its effects. If you missed our earlier posts on heat stress, we suggest checking out How to Combat Heat Stress and The Latest Technology for Preventing Heat Stress.

What Is Dehydration?

About 55-60% of the human body consists of water. Our organs, systems, and cells rely heavily on adequate hydration for optimal performance.

Dehydration is one of the primary contributors to heat stress, happening when fluid and nutrient loss exceeds replenishment. When our body temperature rises—whether due to environmental conditions or physical exertion—we cool ourselves by sweating. Construction workers and laborers typically lose around four to five liters of fluid during a ten-hour shift. Combine that with the fact that over 60% of workers begin their shifts already dehydrated, and it’s clear why dehydration becomes a serious safety issue in workplaces.

Signs of potential dehydration include irritability, drowsiness, irrational behavior, reduced skin elasticity, elevated heart rate, sunken eyes, fatigue, and darker urine.

To assess dehydration, calculate one percent of your weight in kilograms and convert it to liters. The chart above is based on an individual weighing 80 kg (about 175 lbs).

Monitor Your Hydration

Hydration management goes beyond just drinking water when you feel thirsty. As mentioned earlier, when we sweat, we lose not only water but also vital salts and minerals called electrolytes.

Electrolytes play crucial roles in various bodily functions, including water retention, making it equally important to replace them while hydrating. Drinking only water can lead to 'Involuntary Dehydration' in severe cases, where despite consuming water, your body doesn't retain it properly.

Several methods exist for monitoring and maintaining proper hydration levels in the workplace. The simplest approach is checking the color of your urine.

Another method involves scheduled drinking, where you consume small amounts of fluid regularly, regardless of thirst. We recommend drinking about 250 mL of water every 15 minutes, alternating every third cup with an electrolyte beverage.

Lastly, since you're already here reading this blog, pay attention to the signs of dehydration we listed earlier. These are your body’s early warning signals! Often, these alerts appear before your thirst kicks in, so it’s essential to hydrate proactively rather than reactively.

THORZT™ — Your Hydration Solution

THORZTâ„¢ is an electrolyte-replenishing supplement designed to help you stay optimally hydrated. Created by former Olympians, the idea was that if their formula could support rigorous training regimens, it would benefit workers on-site as well.

Most sports drinks are isotonic, meaning they have an equal concentration of solutes compared to your blood, enabling easy nutrient transfer across cell walls.

In contrast, THORZTâ„¢ is a hypotonic solution, meaning its solutes are more diluted than those in our cells. Remember from biology class that osmosis drives water movement from the solution into the cells, quickly rehydrating them.

While the THORZTâ„¢ formula contains electrolytes similar to other popular products (such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium), it also includes L-Glutamine and essential Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) to aid muscle recovery, low-glycemic index carbohydrates for sustained energy release, and a healthy dose of B and C vitamins to strengthen your immune system. It is also free of sugar and caffeine!
