Chicago working fire, 7-20-14

Sunday afternoon in Chicago saw a significant fire break out at the intersection of 117th Street and Michigan Avenue. This is what Eric Haak had to share: "Arriving on the scene, the fire was already fierce, with flames shooting out of a sector B window despite Engine 75 being just two blocks away. The initial blaze on the first floor was quickly contained, but it had spread into a confined attic space, making the job more challenging. All the images showing firefighters working inside without masks or oxygen tanks were captured during the overhaul phase, long after the fire was officially declared extinguished. The attached photos provide a glimpse into the intense efforts of the firefighters. You’ll see the dramatic scenes of smoke billowing out of the roof, as well as firefighters using axes to ventilate the peaked roof structure—a crucial step in controlling the fire's spread. There are also shots of exhausted firefighters catching their breath after battling the inferno, along with those documenting the meticulous overhaul process where they ensure no hidden embers remain. One particularly striking image shows a Chicago Spartan fire engine on the scene, ready to support the firefighting efforts. It’s a reminder of the resources and teamwork required to manage such emergencies. These photos capture not only the chaos and danger of firefighting but also the dedication and resilience of those who put themselves in harm's way to protect others." The combination of these images tells a powerful story of courage and professionalism under pressure.
