Chicago working fire, 7-20-14

On Sunday afternoon, I was on the scene of a fire that broke out on 117th and Michigan Avenue in Chicago. By the time Engine 75 arrived, which is just two blocks away, the fire had already breached a sector B window, sending thick smoke billowing out. The firefighters managed to get the flames on the first floor under control relatively quickly, but the fire had spread into the attic, a confined space that made it more challenging to extinguish completely. The images below capture some of the intense moments during the firefighting effort. All photos showing firefighters working inside without masks or breathing apparatus were taken during the overhaul phase, long after the fire was officially declared out. Safety protocols are crucial, especially in situations like these where conditions can change rapidly. ![Eric Haak photo](#) ![Eric Haak photo](#) ![Eric Haak photo](#) ![Eric Haak photo](#) As the fire was brought under control, you can see the firefighters taking a moment to catch their breath before continuing their work. It's a reminder of the physical and mental toll such incidents take on them. ![Eric Haak photo](#) ![Eric Haak photo](#) ![Eric Haak photo](#) Even after the immediate danger has passed, the overhaul process begins, ensuring no hidden embers remain. This phase requires precision and attention to detail to prevent rekindling. ![Eric Haak photo](#) Finally, here’s a shot of one of the fire engines involved in the operation, a Chicago Spartan, ready to support the team throughout the mission. ![Eric Haak photo](#) Being present at this event was both humbling and eye-opening. It highlights the bravery and dedication of our firefighters who put themselves in harm's way every day to keep us safe.
