Bayer Polyurethane Dispersion Installation in Shanghai
Bayer MaterialScience has launched a new 20,000-ton-per-year waterborne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) production facility at its Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone base. The plant officially began operations on September 12th, marking the first PUD facility of its kind in Asia. This development is aimed at meeting the rising demand for eco-friendly raw materials in coatings and adhesives across China and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
The Shanghai site now hosts a full range of environmentally friendly coating raw material production units, including Desmodur N (11,500 tons/year), Desmodur L (20,500 tons/year), and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons. These facilities support Bayer’s commitment to sustainable innovation and long-term customer supply.
Hu Zuoqian, President of Bayer MaterialScience’s Coatings, Adhesives, and Specialty Chemicals (CAS) Business Unit, emphasized that this new plant reinforces Bayer’s position as a global leader in polyurethane-based coatings and adhesives. “We are not only keeping up with market growth but also ensuring reliable supply and delivering innovative, eco-friendly solutions,†he said.
Waterborne polyurethane dispersions are widely used in various applications, such as fabric and leather coatings, glass fiber compounds, and high-quality sports shoe soles. They are especially valuable where solvent-based systems are restricted, offering a greener alternative for furniture, flooring, automotive parts, and industrial coatings.
For years, Bayer has actively supported the growth of aqueous dispersion technology in China. The company established a polymer research center in Shanghai and contributed to notable projects like the “Water Cube†at the Beijing Olympic Stadium.
In addition to the Shanghai facility, Bayer already operates PUD plants in Dormagen, Germany, and New Martinsville, USA. A new acrylic dispersion (PAC) facility is also set to begin operations in Spain soon. With production sites spread across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, Bayer continues to expand its global footprint in sustainable materials.
