2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 5-29-22

This message comes from Matt Sosnowski: --- It's Sunday, May 29, 2022, and I just witnessed an intense fire in the City of Chicago. The incident took place at the intersection of Justine Street and 45th to 46th Streets, specifically around the 1533 block of West 45th Street and the 1529 block of West 46th Street. It all started with a still alarm at 7:37 PM, but the situation quickly escalated. When Engine 49 arrived on the scene, they reported heavy fire coming out of the back of the building, along with exposure issues. As a result, the Emergency First Alarm Officer (E.F.A.O.) upgraded the response to a Working Fire at 7:42 PM. Additional units were dispatched, including Truck 18, Battalion Chief 15, and multiple ambulances. By 7:44 PM, another box alarm was called in, prompting more reinforcements like Engine 39 and Ladder 51. Battalion Chief 6 also initiated a change of quarters, bringing in backup resources such as Engine 15 for Engine 123, Engine 47 for Engine 50, and Ladder 11 for Ladder 33. Things continued to escalate, and at 7:54 PM, the alarm was upgraded to a 2-11, calling for even more companies to respond. Units from various districts began arriving, including Engines 116, 16, 28, and 65, along with additional ladders and specialized equipment. Battalion Chiefs 2 and 4 also made changes to their assignments, redirecting resources like Engine 84 for Engine 116, Engine 8 for Engine 39, and Engine 18 for Engine 65. The complexity of the situation required a significant mobilization of forces. I managed to capture some photos of the scene, including shots taken by Mariano Stanton and myself. The flames were massive, consuming much of the structure. It’s heartbreaking to see such destruction, but it’s reassuring to know that the firefighters are working tirelessly to control the situation. Here are some images from the event: - [Image: Mariano Stanton photo] - [Image: Matt Sosnowski photo] - [Image: Matt Sosnowski photo] The fire department has done an incredible job under challenging circumstances. My thoughts are with everyone involved, especially those who may have been affected by this tragedy. If you know anyone in the area, please reach out to ensure they’re safe. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops further.
