US West Lake Chemical plans to expand ethylene cracking capacity

Sinochem Xinhua News learned that the West Lake Chemical Company of the United States plans to expand two cracker units in Louisiana, and plans to use its cracker in Kentucky as a raw material instead of propane.


One of the Westlake Chemical Lake Charles, La.-based cracker expansions will begin in the second half of 2012, and the expansion of another cracker will be completed in 2014. The two units currently have an ethylene production capacity of approximately 1.1 million tons/year.


Albert Chao, chief executive of Westlake Chemical, said in a second-quarter earnings conference call that the company also plans to convert a propane-based cracker in Calvert, Kentucky to an ethane cracker.


Chao said: “We are waiting for a Marcellus shale gas pipeline that will transfer the Marcellus shale gas to the coast of the Gulf. We hope to extend the pipeline to Calvert City. Once the raw material of the plant From propane to ethane, we will expand the plant's capacity."


The Calvert City cracker currently has an ethylene capacity of 195,000 tons/year.
