Silvis Fire Department news

Excerpts from wqad.com:

Silvis firefighters are taking on a meaningful and nostalgic project: restoring an 84-year-old fire engine to its original condition. This historic piece of their department's past is now getting a second chance.

The American LaFrance fire engine, purchased by the city in 1939, served as a frontline unit until 1964. Its faded paint still shows it was once engine #2, a symbol of its long and storied service.

"It was traded in and kind of disappeared," said Silvis Fire Chief John Winters. "We think it was sold to a farmer who used it for watering crops or providing water for animals. It was eventually found in a barn years later."

The fire department first heard about the engine a few years ago when a man reached out, having bought the old truck and planning to restore it. While researching its history, he discovered a plaque on the side with the names of the 1939 Silvis mayor, fire chief, and aldermen. Recently, the man decided to sell the engine back to the Silvis Fire Department, giving them the opportunity to bring it back to life.

The goal is to restore the engine as close to its original condition as possible, preserving its historical value while making it functional again.

"We’re going to have to take it apart, sandblast it, and repaint it," Winters explained. "We’ll be checking the mechanicals soon—seeing if the motor turns. If it does, that’s a big win. We can rebuild it and get it running again. If not, we might need to look at other options."

Most of the restoration work will be done by the firefighters themselves, but they plan to hire a professional to hand-paint the original gold leaf flake design on the engine, which is a key part of its historical appearance.

To fund the project, the department is organizing fundraisers and also accepting donations through their “Silvis Fire Department Brotherhood Fire Engine” account at Black Hawk State Bank. The community has shown strong support, with many local residents eager to help preserve this piece of history.

STEREO LIGHT CURING MOLDING - SLA
It mainly uses photosensitive resin as a raw material, and utilizes the characteristic that liquid photosensitive resin will cure quickly under ultraviolet laser beam irradiation. The photosensitive resin is generally liquid, and it immediately initiates a polymerization reaction and completes curing when irradiated with a certain wavelength of ultraviolet light (250 nm to 400 nm). SLA focuses on the surface of the light-curing material by focusing ultraviolet light of a specific wavelength and intensity to solidify it sequentially from point to line and from line to surface, thereby completing the drawing of a layered cross-section.
