On the early morning of Friday, June 2nd, 2017, the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) responded to a call at 24341 Elm Road regarding an ATV on fire. Shortly after arriving, a follow-up call informed dispatchers that the fire had spread to the attached garage. Lake Forest Engine 422 was the first unit on scene and reported a fully involved garage fire. LRFPD Engine 52, Squad 51, and Battalion 51 quickly followed and all three units used their entire water supply in the initial attack. Countryside Engine 411 arrived with the Lincolnshire crews and provided additional water from their tank as well.
The home was located in an unincorporated area of Lake Forest, where no hydrants were available. Upon arrival, Battalion 51 upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for a working fire and initiated a MABAS Box Alarm, which brought in multiple water tankers and additional fire suppression units. Portable tanks were delivered by Long Grove and Countryside tankers, while Long Grove firefighters drafted water from these tanks to supply the engines on site. Tankers from Countryside, Wauconda, Grayslake, and Palatine Rural FPD transported water from a nearby hydrant about a mile away to support the operation.
The fire primarily remained in the garage, with some extension into the house and attic. Despite the challenges posed by the lack of hydrants, firefighters worked efficiently to contain the blaze. The incident highlighted the importance of coordinated response and water supply efforts in rural areas.
Photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, show the intense fire, the effort of the crews, and the aftermath of the incident. More photos are available at Shapirophotography.net.
