ZF develops Dual-Cam dual-lens camera for commercial vehicles

On June 12, 2019, as the world's leading supplier of vehicle cameras, ZF designed the Dual-Cam dual-lens camera for commercial trucks, which can be used with other ZF technologies from ZF.

The Dual-Cam is part of the ZF S-Cam4 automotive camera line designed to help vehicles meet regulatory requirements worldwide. At the same time, it will also provide a variety of advanced features, including traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assistance and lane centering, as well as object and pedestrian monitoring to help achieve automatic emergency braking (AEB).

Dan Williams, head of ADAS and automated systems at ZF Commercial Truck Applications, said: "To ensure that these advanced technologies work effectively on commercial trucks, it is necessary to equip the camera with two lenses. For example, in some cases, for pedestrians, automatic emergency Brake System (AEB), if there is only a standard single-lens camera with a 52-degree angle, may limit the ability of large trucks to monitor pedestrians or other vulnerable groups in complex environments, so that the vehicle does not have enough time to brake to avoid or mitigate accident."

The second lens also provides redundancy as an automatic driving function for the L2+. Once one of the lenses is blocked or fails, the other lens still ensures that the camera is working properly.

ZF's camera technology delivers best-in-class optical performance and is equipped with a high-performance fusion solution package. When combined with other ADAS technologies such as forward-looking radar and angular radar, it can trigger automatic driving functions (such as lane change assist and traffic jam assist systems). These features will provide basic support for many technologies, such as trucking technology, making long-haul trucking safer and more efficient.

ZF has been providing commercial truck ADAS systems to a number of mainstream truck manufacturers for a long time. On the other hand, the group will introduce an advanced ADAS system for a large Japanese automaker in 2020. The system introduced this time includes ZF's first image processing module application. In this application, the camera will process the image in a unit that is separate from the camera housing.

ZF is committed to creating high-security autonomous driving in the commercial truck market through the principle of “observation, reflection and action”. With the ability to “see” the surrounding environmental sensor technology, a powerful processing unit with artificial intelligence (including the ZF ProAI supercomputer product line that can “think” the system), and the ability to provide higher vehicle control through “action” Horizontal intelligent mechanical system.
