On Thursday evening, just before 7 p.m. on April 2, 2020, firefighters and police from Wheeling and Prospect Heights were called to the Chicago Executive Airport following a reported plane crash. According to the airport tower, a small aircraft with one person on board had landed but became stuck in a drainage ditch adjacent to the runway, where it was partially submerged in about two feet of water.
Wheeling Battalion 24 arrived first and found the pilot safely inside the aircraft, with no signs of immediate danger or hazards. The pilot, who was in good condition, managed to exit the plane on his own and signed a medical release form at the scene. Only units from the local district were kept on site, while other responding crews were released.
A fire company remained at the location until a wrecker arrived to remove the aircraft—a Cessna Skyhawk—from the ditch. Emergency personnel, including a Freightliner ambulance and a Rosenbauer America IHC/Timberwolf fire apparatus, were seen on the runway as the situation was being handled. Local photographers captured the scene, showing the aircraft in the ditch and emergency vehicles in action. The incident was resolved without any injuries reported.
