On Thursday evening, just before 7 PM on April 2, 2020, firefighters and police from Wheeling and Prospect Heights were called to the Chicago Executive Airport after a reported plane crash. According to the control tower, a small aircraft with one person on board had landed but ended up in a drainage ditch next to the runway, sitting in about two feet of water.
Wheeling Battalion 24 arrived at the scene and found the pilot safely inside the aircraft, in good condition with no immediate hazards. Only units from the local district were kept on site, while other responding crews were stood down. The pilot managed to exit the plane on their own and signed a medical release form at the location.
A fire company remained at the scene until a wrecker arrived to remove the plane—a Cessna Skyhawk—from the ditch. Several emergency vehicles were also seen on the runway, including a Freightliner ambulance and a Rosenbauer America IHC/Timberwolf fire apparatus. Local photographers captured the incident, showing the aftermath of the landing and the response efforts. The event was a reminder of the importance of quick and coordinated emergency action in such situations.
