Breakthrough in frequency spectrum combing technology is expected to increase spectrum resolution of spectrometers

This indicator is the world record for THz QCL transition from bound state to continuous state. Based on this homogeneous, wide-spectrum THz QCL frequency comb, THz spectral analysis was successfully performed. Related research papers Homogeneous spectral spanning of terahertz semiconductor lasers with radio frequency modulation were published in the March 8th "Science Report" (WJ Wan, H. Li, T. Zhou, and JC Cao, Sci. Rep. 7, 44109 ( 2017)).

Since the 2005 research work on frequency combing was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, frequency banding research in various bands has gradually become a hot work. The frequency comb consists of a series of spectral lines with stable frequency and equal spacing. Because the frequency stability of the frequency comb is very high (Hz-kHz magnitude), it can be analogized to a ruler, and thus applied to absolute frequency measurement, high-precision spectral analysis, or as an ultra-stable frequency reference for other light. In the THz waveband, the development of the THz frequency comb has a certain degree of difficulty due to the lack of an effective radiation source. Among many THz radiation sources, the electric-pumped THz QCL technology is the most effective and practical approach to achieve THz frequency combing. Based on the current implementation of the homogeneous, wide-spectrum THz QCL frequency comb, the research group is developing dual THz QCL frequency comb spectrometry. Compared with the current commercially available THz spectrometers, the frequency-combining spectrum technology is expected to increase by 3-4 orders of magnitude in spectral resolution, which has obvious industrialization prospects.
