This report comes from Eric Haak:
On New Year's Day, firefighters from Chicago’s 5th Battalion started the year with a challenging call. A basement fire broke out early in the morning on the 6300 block of South Evans Street. Fire companies initially entered the structure to make an interior attack, but were soon ordered to evacuate due to rapidly worsening conditions. At that point, the ladder truck was repositioned to the front of the building, and Squad 5’s Snorkel was deployed to sector A. Using the Snorkel along with several hand lines, crews managed to bring the fire under control. Once it was safe, crews were allowed back in for mop-up operations. The home, a large frame residence, had been vacant for several years, which may have contributed to the intensity of the fire. Despite the challenges, the crew handled the situation professionally and efficiently. It's always inspiring to see first responders at work, especially during holidays. Wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous 2017!
