Working fire in Chicago, 1-1-17

This report comes from Eric Haak:

On New Year's Day, firefighters from Chicago’s 5th Battalion responded to a basement fire early in the morning on the 6300 block of South Evans Street. The incident began with an initial interior attack by the first arriving units, but due to rapidly deteriorating conditions, crews were ordered to evacuate the structure. At that point, the engine was pulled back from the front of the building, and Squad 5’s Snorkel was positioned in Sector A. Using the aerial device along with multiple hand lines, firefighters managed to bring the fire under control. Once it was safe, crews were allowed back in to finish the mop-up. The home, a large frame residence, had been vacant for several years, which likely contributed to the intensity of the fire. It's always impressive to see the professionalism and dedication of our first responders, especially on a holiday. Wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous 2017!
