Several well-known pharmaceutical companies have been selected for the creation of major new drugs
In line with the National Medium- and Long-Term Scientific and Technological Development Plan (2006–2020), the State Council launched a major science and technology initiative aimed at accelerating the development of new drugs. This program, known as the "Major New Drug Creation" project, is a large-scale national effort designed to foster innovation in pharmaceutical research and enhance China's capabilities in drug development. The first round of applications has been finalized, with several leading pharmaceutical companies such as Beijing Pharmaceutical Group, North China Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Shimao Group, Zhejiang Pharmaceutical Group, Tianjin Tianshili Group, and Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. being selected as key participants. These firms are now acting as incubators for new drug startups, supporting the growth of innovative pharmaceutical ventures.
Within the framework of the "Technical Innovation" and "Innovative Drug Research and Development" projects, notable players like Beijing Pharmaceutical Group, Tong Ren Tang Group, and Beijing Shuanglu Pharmaceutical Co. have also played significant roles. During the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, the initiative was implemented in two phases. The first batch, launched in 2008, included projects focused on "pharmaculo-species technical transformation," as well as topics such as "innovative drug research and development," "innovative drug research and development technology platform," and "the establishment of a new enterprise drug incubation base." A total of three key areas were prioritized in this phase.
The second batch of projects was initiated in 2009, focusing on the "Key Technology Research and Development of New Drugs," along with continued support for the "innovative drug research and development," "innovative drug research and development technology platform," and "innovation drug incubator base construction." These efforts aim to strengthen China’s pharmaceutical industry by building advanced technological platforms and fostering a robust system for independent drug innovation.
Currently, the application process for the second batch of the "Major New Drug Creation" projects has officially begun. This marks an important step forward in China's ongoing commitment to advancing its pharmaceutical sector through scientific and technological innovation. As more companies and research institutions join the initiative, the potential for breakthroughs in drug development continues to grow, positioning China as a stronger player in the global pharmaceutical landscape.
