As a precedent, the device will provide key experimental data for the engineering research of the ADS transmutation system. China's long-term continuous ADS research is a strategic move under the international nuclear energy development as a responsible large developing country to handle advance disposal of nuclear waste.
China's ADS research has undergone three major stages. The first phase began in 1997, the second phase began in 2011, and the third phase began in 2015. "Rising Star II" is an important achievement of the second phase of ADS R&D. Previously, the zero-power device "Rising Star I" was successfully developed in the Institute of Atomic Energy in July 2005 under the support of the National 973 Program and became the reference device for the AIA's experimental research conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency.


The “Star-Star II” device adopts the “double-core” structure of water reactors and lead stacks innovatively. Through flexible control system selection, dual cores can be quickly started separately to achieve dual functions of benchmarking and engineering verification. Ensure the reliability and accuracy of monitoring technology and measurement data. The device is a multi-functional reactor physics comprehensive experiment research platform with solid uranium rods with different enrichment degrees as nuclear fuel, and water or lead as medium. After the completion of the “Rising Star II” device, it can be used to carry out series of ADS reactor physical static and dynamic parameter measurement experiments, stack-target coupling characteristics experiments, and reactive supervision and measurement experiments.
