The Liebherr Group Parts Division provides a new test platform for slewing bearing verification services. This platform is mainly for large diameter bearings for wind turbines. As a long-term partner of the wind power industry, Liebherr has once again expanded its product portfolio in the market. After 18 months of development, design and production, the new test platform was officially launched in the second quarter of this year.

Liebherr main bearing large test bench introduction

All design, development and calculation work is done at the Liebherr Beberach plant in Germany, enabling the test platform to perform optimally under real conditions. The components of the test platform are mainly produced by Liebherr itself, such as hydraulic cylinders, electric motors and planetary reducers. In order to test the main bearing in a truly machine operating environment, a wind turbine generator set is used as the assembly prototype. It reproduces the rigid conditions of the wind turbine generator, and the engineer can simulate the damage deformation, which may occur when the bearing is loaded. Wind power loads can be simulated to the limit very accurately. The load simulation system on the test platform consists of an electric motor and a hydraulic system that produces a maximum radial load of 2 MW and 8 MNm overturning moment. The test platform is rated at 15 rpm, allowing the bearings to rotate at high speeds, reducing test time over the expected life cycle.

In addition to double row tapered roller bearings and three row roller bearings, the new test platform can also be used for future validation of new design bearings. Future tests will provide valuable material for extending bearing raceways, seals and rolling element life, and help to design a More optimized and ideal main bearing. “In addition, we will determine the specific friction torque for different bearing types and continue to optimize our calculations,” said Andreas Palmer, Head of Bearing Development and Design at Liebherr. It also detects various operating parameters of the bearing, such as grease quality, temperature and wear. “The test will provide valuable information on the assembly, warpage, hardness and preload of the entire bearing. This makes it possible to achieve a lighter weight and a more compact size of the bearing,” continues Andreas Palmer.

Field testing and bench testing will be performed simultaneously on the customer's fan. Through this investment, Liebherr provides structured product verification for bearings with continuous rotational torque and lays a solid foundation for future product expansion.
