Increased Demand for Ford South Africa Plant to Expand Production of Diesel Engines

In order to meet Ford ’s demand for Duratorq TDCi diesel engines in the North American market, Ford South Africa will expand its engine capacity at its Elizabeth factory.

Jeff Nemeth, president and CEO of Ford South Africa, said a few days ago that being able to produce the Duratorq TDCi engine for the North American market was a major achievement, representing the first time that Ford South Africa had exported engines to the United States.

The new Ford Ranger is equipped with a 3.2-liter Duratorq 5-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produced by Ford South Africa. The engine will also be used next year to assemble the Transit lorry produced at a North American plant.

Ford South Africa spokesperson Rella Bernardes said that in order to expand engine production capacity, the company has installed new equipment for the Elizabeth Port plant and updated the plant's production line; the plant currently generates 75,000 engines and 220,000 engine components per year. After the expansion of production capacity, it can generate 106,000 engines per year.

Rella Bernards added that the expansion plan is expected to be implemented in the middle of next year but will not create new jobs.
