Countryside FPD 2nd Alarm haz mat box 3-19-14

The Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) called for a second alarm hazardous materials response this morning after a truck trailer overturned in Vernon Hills. According to the *Daily Herald*, the incident caused significant traffic delays on one of central Lake County’s busiest roads. Wednesday morning rush hour was disrupted when a truck's trailer flipped over on Route 60 at Butterfield Road around 6:20 a.m. Battalion Chief Kevin Wodrich of the Countryside FPD confirmed that no one was seriously injured in the accident. The truck, operated by Con-way Freight, was carrying two trailers, one of which tipped over as the vehicle turned from southbound Butterfield Road onto eastbound Route 60, according to local police. The truck was transporting four 300-gallon tanks—two containing potassium hydroxide and two with phosphoric acid. Some of the chemicals leaked during the accident, prompting a hazardous materials team to arrive on the scene. They successfully contained the leaks, allowing cleanup crews to begin removing the spilled substances. Tim Olk, a local photographer, was on site and captured several images of the incident. His photos show the overturned trailer, heavy tow trucks, and the ongoing cleanup efforts. The road remained closed for several hours, causing major congestion and frustration for commuters. This type of incident highlights the importance of quick emergency response and the potential risks associated with transporting hazardous materials. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident to prevent similar incidents in the future.
