China's four emission standards to stimulate the lube market

Recently, the Ministry of Environmental Protection issued an announcement stating that from July 1, 2013, all production, import, sales, and registration of vehicle compression ignition engines and automobiles must meet the requirements of the National IV emission standards. In addition, the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau also announced recently that Beijing will take the lead in implementing national V motor vehicle emission standards in China, and the timetable will be determined in the second half of this year.

The implementation time of the National IV emission standards was finalized, which caused great repercussions in the industry, including the related industries of engines and aftertreatment devices. According to the reporter, this move also stimulated the nerves of the lubricant market.

â–  The National IV standard will lift the lube oil market from the previous emission upgrade process. There is an inevitable link between the adjustment of product structure in the lube market and the upgrading of automobile emissions.

At present, the emission of diesel vehicles in China needs to reach the Level III of the country, and the engine must be installed with an exhaust gas recirculation device (EGR). However, the loading of EGR has deteriorated the operating conditions of the engine oil. As a result, the deterioration of the lubricant and the wear of the engine have occurred. According to reports, this is mainly due to the fact that the exhaust gas circulating in the combustion chamber increases the amount of soot intruded into the lubricating oil, thereby causing an increase in the insoluble matter in the lubricating oil. Therefore, an engine equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation system must comprehensively improve the quality of the lubricating oil, and ensure that the lubricating oil has excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and soot handling capabilities before it can meet the requirements of EGR.

The engine emission is upgraded from the national III standard to the national IV standard. There are two technical routes in the country: one is high pressure common rail + SCR, and the other is EGR + DPF (particle trap) / POC (particulate catalytic oxidizer). The technical staff of CNPC Lubricant Company told the reporter that Europe uses CJ-4 to meet the requirements of the SCR technology route. “The level of lubricant used depends on the engine technology. From a foreign point of view, the current common practice is to use CJ-4 grade lubricants for high pressure common rail + SCR.”

In the domestic diesel engine lubricants market, CF-4 grade products have become popular products, directly replacing low-end products; and the market for CH-4 and above grade products is also rapidly expanding. With the implementation of the National IV emission standards, CI-4 and other higher-level products will be directly driven, and their market performance will also be different.

â–  CH-4 or into the lube market "new darling"

According to the technical personnel of China National Petroleum Corporation, from the current market situation, the CH-4 and CF-4 grades are still the mainstream lubricants for domestic commercial vehicles. If the National IV emission standard can be implemented as scheduled in July of next year, the lubricating oil for CF-4 diesel engines will gradually fade out of the market as the emissions increase. If the lubricating oil fails to meet the requirements of EGR, the engine will cause unnecessary wear due to the increased amount of soot and shorten the life of the engine. If domestic enterprises adopt EGR+DPF to meet the national IV emission standards, at least CI-4+ grade lubricants must be used.

According to industry insiders, for the lubricants industry, the implementation of IV emission standards for commercial vehicles means that CH-4 lubricants that meet the national III emission standards will become the main products for sale this year. Compared with the lower-grade CF-4 lubricants, the overall sales volume in the industry this year is expected to decline significantly. After the second half of next year, with the full implementation of the National IV standard, CI-4 lubricants, which are the most suitable configuration for the China IV commercial vehicle, will see an explosion in sales volume.

An engineer of the Sinopec Lubricant Company's Beijing R&D Center told the reporter: “According to the standard, the oil that meets the national III emission standard should be CH-4, but nowadays, in addition to CH-4, CF-4 is commonly used in the market. The implementation of the National IV emission standard will certainly promote the development of the CI-4 market. From the domestic market perspective, CI-4 is more adopted by the public transport system."

■ The company has made a good technical reserve to locate the high-end products market in the oil industry. Qingdao Compton Technology Co., Ltd. is a professional manufacturer and service provider of lubricants and automotive maintenance products. The relevant person in charge of the company said: “The low-end products in China's lubricants market account for a large share, and the product quality is low. This is an indisputable fact. Compton has always been concerned about the upgrading of oil and the implementation of emission regulations, and There are plans to continuously upgrade the product structure to ensure that the new specification products are launched synchronously with the US market. At present, our company sells CF-4 and above products in 85% of the entire product line, and the high-end CI-4 and CJ-4 products also Already put into the market, it can fully meet the requirements of relevant laws and regulations."

Shell United (Beijing) Petrochemical Co., Ltd., with the continuous introduction of higher national emission standards and increased awareness of lubricant consumption, is at the forefront of new product development. The person in charge of the company's technical department told the reporter: “The unified lubricant oil diesel engine product performance is particularly outstanding, and its hydraulic pressure king, hard-working king, and super viscous three product lines all have CI-4 grade products, and fully meet the national IV emission standards. Among them, the hydraulic king series also has a higher level of CJ-4 grade products. At present, we focus on the CH-4 series products that meet the national III standard. This series of products uses refined base oils and high-efficiency composite additives. , With better fuel economy, anti-wear performance and fuel consumption control. As the implementation time of the National IV emission standards is approaching, we will gradually shift our focus to products with a grade of CI-4 and above."

The technical personnel of CNPC Lubricants Company stated that all companies in the industry have a certain technical reserve for lubricants that meet the national IV emission standards. The specifics of how market conditions will evolve in the future depend on the technical route adopted by the engine to implement State IV. The final market demand.
