Chicago EMS Plan II on I90/94 2-15-15

On February 15, 2015, photographer Tim Olk captured a series of powerful images from the scene of a major multi-vehicle crash on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago. The incident occurred in the express lanes near North Avenue, and it was reported that nearly 40 cars were involved. The crash led to 59 medical refusals and 12 patients being transported to local hospitals. Tim Olk’s photos provide a vivid look at the aftermath of the accident, showing the scale of the collision and the challenging winter conditions that contributed to the incident. The images highlight the chaos and the efforts of emergency responders working under difficult circumstances. According to the Chicago Tribune, lake-effect snow was causing slippery road conditions, particularly near Lake Michigan, leading to multiple accidents across the area. On the Kennedy Expressway, a chain-reaction crash involving between 20 and 30 vehicles temporarily closed the expressway in the inbound lanes. The crash occurred around 10 a.m. and affected traffic between North Avenue and the Ohio Street off-ramp. Authorities from the Illinois State Police confirmed the situation, and the expressway was reopened by approximately 11 a.m. The lack of shoulders on the express lanes made the situation even more dangerous, as drivers had limited space to maneuver. Emergency services worked quickly to clear the area and assist those involved. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks posed by severe winter weather and the importance of cautious driving during such conditions.
