MBBR Technology and Biofilm CarriersMBBR technology is based on the biofilm principle, where an active biofilm grows on small, specially designed plastic carriers that remain suspended in the reactor. This system combines the advantages of both activated sludge and other biofilm systems (like biofilters or biorotors) while avoiding their limitations.

MBBR Technology
Technical Details
The aerated MBBR uses the entire volume of an open tank, just like the activated sludge process. It is considered a biofilm system because the biomass grows on carriers that move freely within the reactor volume and are retained by a sieve at the outlet. The system can be used for aerobic or anoxic processes. In aerobic processes, the biofilm carriers are kept in suspension through agitation from air diffusers, while in anoxic processes, a mixer keeps them moving. A schematic of the WOCK OLIVER MBBR technology implementation is shown below
(Figure 1).

Small Boss MBBR Biofilm Carriers
We offer a range of biofilter media, available by the cubic meter. These products are suitable for fluidized or moving bed tank systems, also known as "Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)" systems, used for water and wastewater treatment.
Self-cleaning due to turbulence:
The turbulent movement of the biofilter media in suspension allows it to clean itself, requiring no maintenance. This ensures optimal effectiveness without the need for periodic maintenance, preventing unnecessary loss of bacteria and maintaining stable ammonia and nitrite levels in the water.
The first few models are similar to the patented Kaldnes media used in aquaculture and waste treatment. Their design creates an environment conducive to effective nitrification. Aeration circulates the media throughout the vessel, and the high surface area of these products means a smaller physical footprint is needed for the biofiltration unit.
Media volume needed:
With good turbulence and aeration, a feed rate of between 0.25 kg and 0.75 kg of 40% protein food per day requires 50 liters of media.

The core of MBBR technology is the biofilm carrier, which is designed to provide a large protected surface area for the biofilm and optimal conditions for bacterial growth when suspended in water.
Small Boss has developed several types of carriers with different shapes, sizes, and surface areas. This flexibility allows us to choose the most suitable carrier depending on the characteristics of the wastewater, pretreatment requirements, discharge standards, and available space. Currently, we have ten different types of carriers.
